How to Pause the Dino Game

There's no pause button in the dino game — but you can still pause a run. The trick is that browsers freeze the game for you.

The tab-switch pause

Browser games draw each frame with an animation timer that browsers stop when a tab is hidden. So the moment you switch to another tab (Ctrl+Tab) or another window (Alt+Tab), the dino freezes mid-stride. Come back, press nothing, and the run continues where it left off.

On mobile

Switching apps or returning to the home screen does the same thing — the run is frozen until you reopen the browser. Avoid leaving it too long: an aggressive battery saver can discard the tab entirely, which ends the run.

How our games handle it

We build the games on this site with a fixed-step clock, so a pause can't hurt you: when you return, the game resumes at normal speed with no sudden catch-up jump. Test it on the dino runner or Flappy Dino — jump, switch tabs, come back.

A pause is also a legitimate strategy on long runs: rest your hands at a safe moment between obstacles. More endurance tips in our high-score guide.

FAQ

Can you pause the Chrome dino game?

Yes, indirectly. Switching tabs or windows freezes the game automatically, and it resumes where you left off when you come back. There is no built-in pause button.

Does pausing the dino game reset your score?

No. A tab-switch pause keeps your run and score intact. Only closing the tab, reloading the page, or a crash into an obstacle ends the run.
